On most model airplanes in an outdoor environment there is a a risk of loosing your airplane in a thermal. The elastic band rear hangar is a toothpick which will drop the elastic once it's unwound. This will tow the airplane down out of a thermal and save it from loss.
In a strong thermal, nothing can help. 🙂
I am not so sure this will be enough to bring the plane down when in really strong thermal lift.
